Commitment to Sustainability

I aim to make beautiful objects that don’t cost the earth. As my business grows I remain committed to adapting to what’s possible towards that end; After all, it is mother nature herself that provides the inspiration for my designs. My impact isn't as minimal as I hope it could be one day, but I'm open about that and working on it.

So currently, what are my sustainability credentials?

Non-toxic - durable - low energy production - minimal waste

Jesmonite, the brand name of the eco-resin that is the main constituent of many of my products has a low energy manufacturing process, is durable and non-toxic.

Jesmonite mainly consists of gypsum made from a sedimentary rock, surface mined and manufactured in the UK, travelling no more than 4 hours to production. The manufacturing process requires little energy with steam being its largest emission. UK gypsum manufacturers are committed to various sustainability initiatives including the re-use of by-products, recycling materials and using minimal packaging. The gypsum is bound with a water-based acrylic resin. Unlike epoxy resin the materials are non-toxic and don’t contain VOCs so there are no pollutants released into the atmosphere. The end product is extremely durable so product replacement is highly unlikely. Acrylic is a very small part of Jesmonite and once cured and de-moulded I keep the waste for re-use in future projects, so barely any of it goes in the bin and none down the sink. It sets at room temperature, so no kiln, and I don’t use any electrical tools - Only human energy is expended!

I currently re-use packaging fillers and one of the ways I intend to improve sustainability in future is to buy biodegradable/compostable packaging.

 Limited and open edition prints

I use a company that minimises energy expenditure, uses renewables where possible and offsets remaining emissions. All the way from my image files being uploaded to their system, to the careful delivery of quality fine art prints to you, The Print Space are 100% end-to-end carbon neutral. https://www.theprintspace.co.uk/carbon-neutral-art-printing-service/

Restored/upcycled pieces

By choosing to restore and re-use objects, we not only preserve their history but also reduce our environmental impact. We help to conserve resources, reduce deforestation rates, and lower the carbon footprint associated with furniture production. In addition, the traditional restoration materials I use are produced from natural sources.
